Seasonal Apartment Amenities to Look For

When you move into a new apartment, it’s important to think about what living there will be like for the long term, as in every season: spring, summer, fall, and winter. For each season, there are certain apartment amenities you may want to look for to make your overall living experience the best it can be.

Outdoor swimming pool

During the summer, an outdoor swimming pool is one of the best things you can have. Especially because the summer months (between May and August) are the most popular times for renters to move in, swimming pools are in high demand and are a great selling point. It’s especially convenient if you’re the kind of person who loves to hang out by the pool every day in the summer. You won’t have to pay for a membership at a community pool or schlep to one that’s far away; instead, you’ll have one right in your own backyard.

Athletic courts

If you love to play sports outdoors, athletic courts may be a priority on your list. The most common courts in apartment communities include basketball, volleyball, and tennis courts -- all of which you can certainly enjoy year-round but may be even more useful during the summer months. Having athletic courts nearby is super convenient for getting some exercise in and even mingling and hanging out with your neighbors in the community.

Dog park

If you have a dog, a dog park is a convenient perk to have so that you don’t have to go somewhere far away to keep your dog happy and fit. Letting your dog play with other dogs in the community will make him or her happy while also giving you the chance to socialize with other dog owners.

Outdoor grill and patio

If you want to host a barbecue with friends and/or family during the summer, an outdoor grill and patio are very convenient to have. You can use the space for the day and simply clean up after yourself when you’re done so others in the community can enjoy it, too.

Private balcony

When it’s warm out, having a private balcony is always a nice extra perk. It’s a great place to enjoy a cup of coffee (or any drink of your choice), read, and relax during the night or day. You can also decorate it any way you like with plants, furniture, and lights to make it feel cozy and comfortable.

Indoor fitness center

While an indoor fitness center is a great amenity to have no matter what time of year it is, it can be especially useful during the winter when you don’t feel like trekking over to your local gym or when it’s too cold to exercise outdoors, like if you want to go for a run. Granted, most fitness centers in apartment complexes are not very large and may not have as much equipment as a full-sized gym, but they are certainly good enough for you to hit your fitness goals.

Covered or garage parking

If it snows often in the winter, a covered parking area with a carport or a parking garage is a great option to protect your car from the elements. This can be very convenient, as you won’t have to clean snow off your car the next time a blizzard hits.

A fireplace may seem like a bit more of a luxury, but it can be a great touch to your apartment, especially during the winter or if you live in a typically cold place. If you decide to rent an apartment with a fireplace, you’ll likely have to consider whether you’ll get a wood, gas, or electric fireplace and how often you’ll use it for it to be worth it.

Amenities for any season

Community clubhouse

If your apartment complex includes a community clubhouse, make sure to take advantage of that perk. You can do so many things with the clubhouse year-round. For instance, you can rent out space to study or host other events if you find that your own apartment is not the most appropriate space for hosting. On the other hand, if your apartment community is hosting its own event or social gathering, feel free to check it out and take the opportunity to make new friends with other residents. You may be able to hang out in the game room or recreation room, play games with others, watch TV, and have access to snack bars and vending machines.

There are a number of great amenities to look for when searching for an apartment, so make sure to keep an eye out and weigh your options.
