    Clemson University is in Clemson, South Carolina, just beneath the Blue Ridge Mountains and near Lake Hartwell. The university was founded in 1889 focusing on agricultural research at first. The campus sits on 1,400 acres of property and is the second most populated university in South Carolina.

    Many first-year students choose to live on campus at Clemson University in one of their first-year community dormitories. However, upperclassmen do choose to move off-campus while attending Clemson. There are plenty of options when it comes to off-campus housing.

    Neighborhoods

    Students who choose to live in apartments or houses off-campus at Clemson University typically reside in one of two neighborhoods: Calhoun and Clemson. Since Clemson, South Carolina is known as a college town, you can expect to see many college students living in the area.

    The Clemson neighborhood is mostly residential and suburban with tree-lined streets. You will not expect to find any city ambiance in Clemson, as it is a quiet and reserved area. Most students live within the boundaries of Ford Road south to Old Greenville Highway, and east to W Main Street with Twelve Mile Creek to the west.

    Students have the option of renting an off-campus apartment in a duplex, triplex, or apartment building. They can also rent single-family or townhomes. There are plenty of options for a variety of lifestyles.

    Many students choose to rent an apartment at University Village at Clemson, which was rated the best off-campus apartments in 2019. This complex offers great amenities, three to four-bedroom units, and is close to campus.

    GrandMarc Clemson Apartments offers two to four-bedroom units that are all very modern. The complex itself features a study space, fitness center, and other attractive amenities.

    Clemson Living offers students three varieties of off-campus living. Students can choose from The Orchard Clemson, 109 College, and The Estate Clemson complexes all managed by Clemson Living. These living options feature spacious bedrooms with great amenities.

    Dining

    There are several restaurants, both sit-in and grab on the go, around Clemson University off-campus housing. Along Tiger Boulevard, students can find chains like KFC, Dunkin', Potbelly Deli, Pizza Hut, and Chick-fil-A as well as local eateries like Calhoun Corners.

    Down towards Clemson's campus along Route 133, there are more local and small business owned restaurants and cafes. Students tend to favor Groucho's Deli, All in Coffee Shop, Spill the Beans, and Tiger Town Tavern.

    As for bars in Clemson, there are several sports and college bars that the students frequent. These include Esso Club, Loose Change, Study Hall, and Backstreets Pub and Grill. For finer dining and drinks, students can choose from Palmetto's Smokehouse and Oyster Bar or 356 Sushi and Martini Bar.

    Transportation

    Students and residents of Clemson can take Clemson Area Transit (CAT) throughout the area free of charge. This bus transportation system is paid for by the city of Clemson and is a convenient service for students and residents alike who do not have a car or would rather take public transportation.

    Clemson University has its own shuttle, Tiger Transit, which travels through the campus as well as off-campus locations.

    During the holiday season, beginning and end of the semesters, Clemson University also offers an airport shuttle to its students who are traveling over the breaks.

    For the commuters and those who live off-campus and drive to campus every day, the university has a Park ‘n Ride program. This service allows students and faculty to park in a lot and take a shuttle to and from campus.

    Parking

    Around the town of Clemson, especially where students choose to live off-campus, there is plenty of free street parking. If renting an apartment in a complex, there are parking spaces available. If renting from an independent landlord, most properties do have driveways or parking spaces of some sort.

    There are parking lots on Clemson University's campus that students and faculty can receive a parking permit for the semester. Prices vary on which lot individuals would like a spot in.

    The Park ‘n Ride service has a few parking lots on the outskirts of campus where students and faculty can park and hop on a shuttle that will bring them to campus. The cost of this service is $50 per semester.

    Safety

    Clemson University works closely with the Clemson Police Department to ensure the safety of its students both on and off-campus. There are multiple resources and services provided by the university for all crime and wellness services.

    Around campus, students will notice the blue emergency phones. Strategically placed so there is almost always one in sight, students can quickly get in contact with the police in case of an emergency.

    Clemson University and the surrounding area are safe. However, it is always important, no matter where you are, to take safety precautions. Avoid walking alone at night and lock your doors.

    Shopping

    Since Clemson is a small town there are not a lot of shopping options for students directly in town. If looking for a larger shopping area with brand name stores, students can travel to Applewood Shopping Center or the Anderson Mall.

    Around Clemson University's campus, there are multiple supermarkets where students can do their grocery shopping. Right on campus is the Clemson Farm Fresh Market, off-campus students can find the Tiger Mart, Publix, and a Walmart.

    For pharmaceutical needs and a quick food or ingredient stop, there is a CVS, Walgreens, and Hubbard/Young Pharmacy in the area.
