Founded in 1865, the University of Kentucky is known for its varied academic programs, strong emphasis on athletics, hundreds of student clubs (including a large Greek life), and a beautiful 814-acre campus. Located in Lexington, the state’s second-largest city, the University of Kentucky is not only great for the overall college experience, but it is also perfect for exploring and enjoying city-life. If you have recently been admitted to the University of Kentucky (UK or UKY for short) or are looking to familiarize yourself with the university and its surrounding area, this comprehensive guide will give you all the information you need, ranging from transportation to safety and even great food in the area!

    Neighborhoods

Like most college students in the country, students at UK typically live in on-campus dorms for their first year of college. Popular dorms include Blazer Hall, Holmes Hall, Wildcat Coal Lodge, Boyd Hall, and Jewel Hall. In fact, in 2016, a total of 90% of UK’s freshmen lived on-campus.

After freshman year, students will either stay in on-campus housing or seek housing elsewhere nearby. Some of the best neighborhoods/areas that students live in include: Historic South Hill, Woodland Triangle, and Virginia Ave. Within these areas, students frequent Limestone St., and Virginia St., two main roads that are alongside campus. Students also look for off-campus housing in the Montclair neighborhood, between Tates Creek Rd. and Limestone St.

Some apartments complexes that students favor include Newton, 524/525 Angliana, the Wyatt, Limestone Square, UKMVP apartments, Anderson Communities University Village, and Woodland Village apartments.

Additionally, for University of Kentucky student that are looking for furnished apartments on-campus, University Flats is a great option. These 2- and 4-bedroom apartments include individual bedrooms, a washer and dryer in the unit, a full kitchen with stainless steel appliances and a fully furnished living room.

    Dining

In a quintessential southern city, one might think that Lexington’s food scene would be centered around traditional southern cuisine, but it is that and so much more.

Students at the University of Kentucky have endless options of food to choose from, whether its Cajun food at local favorite Bourbon and Toulouse, finger-licking barbecue at Billy’s BBQ, or margaritas and delectable tacos at Local Taco. Other popular restaurants on or around campus include Ramsey’s, Cane’s, Pazzo’s, Hibachi Grill, and Joe Bologna’s.

In a large college atmosphere like UK, socializing at bars is not only important but for most students, it is a rite of passage. Some of the local student favorites include Two Keys Tavern, McCarthy’s Irish Bar, Hugo’s, Tin Roof, Stagger Inn. Whether you want to chow down on wings while watching college football, kick back and enjoy live music, or dance the night away with some energetic music- there is a place out there for you!

    Transportation

As UK is home to some 23,000 undergraduate students, and even more graduate students, faculty and staff, transportation services are especially important. Thousands of UK’s students, staff, and faculty travel to campus every day, with the primary ways of travel being car, bus, biking, and walking. For those UKY students that have cars, parking permits are necessary to obtain.

There are two main bus transportation services at the University of Kentucky, the on-campus routes, and the Free Citywide Transit. The on-campus routes are designated by color (Blue, White, Yellow, Green and Orange) and operate on a continuous loop. The Citywide Transit is a partnership between UK’s Transportation Services and the Lexington Transit Authority (Lextran). With the Citywide Transit, UK students and employees simply must show a University ID to travel the Lextran’s routes free of charge.

Biking as a means of traveling to and from campus is encouraged, as the University of Kentucky has plenty of resources to support student bikers, such as a student-run bike shop, free bike rentals, fix-it stations, bike parking, city-wide bike and e-scooter share, and fun events.

    Parking

Though UK has a large campus, parking is still limited. As stated previously, parking permits are necessary for all students, staff, and faculty who travel to campus using their own vehicles. For students, parking permits are divided into two categories: students living on-campus and students living off-campus.

On-campus students can get either a residential permit, periphery permit, or remote permit. Students living off-campus can get a commuter permit, periphery permit, or off-peak permit. Pricing for the different permits depends on where you live (on or off-campus), where you are looking to park, and for which academic semester. Availability for parking can fluctuate depending on the time of year- for instance, there is more available parking during the Summer or Winter break.

    Safety

The University of Kentucky takes the safety of its students very seriously, offering several different resources to ensure their protection and assistance if a problem arises. The college has its own safety department, The University of Kentucky Police Department, to assist with and guarantee the safety of UK students.

SafeCats is UK’s one-number coordinated student safety services program. The program has several different services including SafeCats student safety escort service, after-hours on-demand Cats bus service (transportation on-call bus services Sunday-Thursday), UK violence intervention, and prevention VIP center, and UK-Resource and Referral line.

At UK, Cat’s Path includes different walking routes across central campus. With highly visible signs and paw print ground logos, the routes of Cat’s Path are patrolled by University Police. Additionally, many security cameras and blue emergency phone towers are installed along Cat’s Path to further ensure the safety and security of students.

    Shopping

Outside of UK itself, the city of Lexington has so much to offer for students. In terms of shopping, students can visit a variety of areas depending on their interests. Perhaps you want to pick out a new outfit for a formal next week, or you want to grab some fresh veggies from the farmers’ market- Lexington has got you covered! Some great places to shop include Victorian Square, Failte Irish Imports, and Target.
