North Carolina State University Off-Campus Housing Guide

North Carolina State University is located in Raleigh, which has been named the best big city in the southeast and boasts a number of other achievements. The university has three campuses, which can make moving off-campus seem daunting. However, NCSU has a ton of valuable resources to help its students out while they move off-campus, from parking and transportation to a variety of dorm and apartment options.

    Neighborhoods

There are plenty of NCSU apartments near the North Carolina State University campus. A popular intersection is Western Boulevard and Gorman Street. There are several apartments there that are popular among students, including College Inn.

Other streets that are popular for Raleigh apartments include Smallwood Drive, Park Avenue, and Carlton Avenue.

For students looking for other NCSU off-campus housing options, Wolf Village and Wolf Ridge apartments are official apartments for North Carolina State University students and there are plenty of units for you and your NCSU roommates to choose from.

There are a variety of neighborhoods around campus, including Martin Homes, College Crest, Cameron Village and Boulevard Park, that offer student housing as well. Northwest Raleigh could also be considered. There are also a wide variety of apartments located in the Martin Homes section of Raleigh. Outside of Raleigh, there are plenty of cities that are near North Carolina State Universities campuses. Clayton, North Carolina is just minutes from campus. Stallings Mill is an apartment complex located in Clayton that is pet-friendly.

For students looking to escape the urban atmosphere of Raleigh, Knightsdale is about 20 minutes from campus, if you drive. Durham is another town located within a half hour of campus. Balfour West Apartments in Durham are pet-friendly apartments and have washer and dryer connections.  Other nearby towns and cities include Chapel Hill and Burlington, both in North Carolina.

    Dining

For students living near the main campus, Sammy’s Tap and Grill is a popular restaurant. Students also have access to a wide variety of fast food options for something quick. Students who opt for Papa John’s near campus may be able to get a student discount. For those who opt to live in Clayton, North Carolina near Raleigh, restaurants such as McKinley’s Restaurant and Grill and Rockin’ Comet Diner are great options.

    Transportation

Since the university has three campuses, there are many transportation options.

Wolfline is North Carolina State’s bus service. While it is geared towards students, it is also available for use by the public. The bus line services all three of NC State’s campuses, three park and ride lots, NCSU official housing and privately owned apartment complexes. Bus riders do not need to show a university ID, pass, or fare in order to take advantage of the free bus ride. The buses are red, white, and black with the Wolfline lettering logo.

The Route 17 RS Lot Shuttle is a shuttle that runs between Centennial Campus Storage Lot and main campus residence halls and stops including Morrill Drive and Cates Avenue, Talley Student Union, Witherspoon Student Center, Bragaw Hall, and Wolf Village. The shuttle runs every half hour between 8PM and midnight Sunday evenings or the evening before classes resume after a holiday.

GoRaleigh is Raleigh’s bus service. Students may choose to utilize this service if they want to explore downtown Raleigh or another area off-campus. Those who are commuting from nearby towns and cities can do so via GoTriangle. Both of these transportation options have a variety of fares and passes depending on what the student may need.

Many students may opt to bike to and from campus. Bikes may not be stored in areas such as halls, stairwells, or other common areas since they block evacuation route, but may be stored in rooms. Students who have a bike must register their bikes annually with NC State Transportation. This registration is free.

    Parking

NC State University has a bunch of parking garages for students who live on or near campus, and for those who commute by car. Permits are sold for the semester and are sold to students based on the number of parking spots available as well as whether the student is a resident or a commuter. There are also credit requirements for certain parking spots, so it is important for students to ensure they get the proper permit.

    Safety

North Carolina State University has a system called Would Alert where students can sign up for text alerts and be notified of any emergencies that may be taking place as well as how to respond. This also coordinates with the Wolf Alert Audible Warning System, where a message regarding emergency information and actions that need to occur are broadcasted on poles and building roofs.

For those in an emergency situation, call 911 on a campus phone or activate the emergency blue light phone.

Residence halls and apartments located on or around campus require a student ID to be entered. These buildings have surveillance cameras in certain common areas.

For those living in Wolf Village or Wolf Ridge apartments, the exterior doors are unlocked, and the lobby is open to anyone, but areas beyond the lobby require student IDs. Student IDs are setup to allow you to access all eight buildings within these complexes.

Students are advised to lock their doors and avoid propping entry doors open. Students should also be careful not to let anyone in unless they are their guest.

    Shopping

Students living in off-campus apartments in Raleigh have access to a variety of shopping options, including a Walmart Supercenter and Target. There is also a Best Buy near campus for all your tech needs. And, there is even a Grand Asia Market, which is an Asian grocery store.
