    Sacramento State Off-Campus Housing Guide

    Located in Sacramento, California, California State University (also known as CSUS or Sacramento State) is a public university. Founded in 1947 as Sacramento State College, it is the eleventh oldest school in the 23-campus California State University system.

    The 300-acre campus enrolls about 31,000 students annually, offering 151 different bachelor’s degrees. While on-campus housing houses approximately 2,000 students, a large majority of students at Sacramento State live in off-campus housing.

    Neighborhoods

    Sacramento State has many different off-campus housing options for CSUS students to choose from. There are the Upper Eastside Lofts, which are the only affiliated off-campus housing option at the university. They are within walking distance to campus and are serviced by the Hornet Shuttle, which offers residents rides to and from campus.

    Academy 65 offers off-campus apartments that are within walking distance of off-campus dining and shopping locations while staying close to campus.

    There is also the Riverbridge Apartments, which offers off-campus apartments within walking distance to Sacramento State and is just minutes away from off-campus shopping locations. Further down University Avenue, there’s Twelve55 Living and University Gardens.

    Down Redding Avenue, there’s Element Student Living, which offers fully furnished floor plans to CSUS students.

    Lark Sacramento, also located on Redding Avenue, is an off-campus apartment that caters to CSUS students as well. Lark offers a private shuttle bus to and from campus, which is just minutes away. Students can sign a lease with their own chosen roommates or choose to get randomly matched roommate by Lark. Unlike many off-campus apartments, at Lark each tenant is only responsible for their own rent.

    Further off-campus, there are more options available for those looking for off-campus apartments, including Howe Manor Apartments and Howe Manor East. Along Hurley Way, there are plenty of off-campus apartments that are near dining options, including Bel Fair Apartments, Bell Oaks Apartments, Ravello Apartments, and Sterling Point Apartments.

    Dining

    There are many restaurants around Sacramento and close to off-campus apartments near California State University, Sacramento.

    Down Howe Avenue, there are dining options and options for those 21+ looking to unwind. There’s Gordito Burrito, Taco Bell, McDonald’s, and Denny’s for quick eats. Or, for those 21+, there’s Stingers, a sports bar.

    Just off-campus, there’s brewery Porchlight Brewing Company and brunch hotspot Mimosa House. There’s also Clubhouse 56, which is a sports bar with classic pub grub and cocktails.

    Along Hurley Way and Howe Avenue you will find sit down restaurants like Buca di Beppo Italian, Outback Steakhouse, and Red Lobster.

    Transportation

    Sacramento State has a free campus transit system called the Hornet Shuttle. To ride shuttles, CSUS students must show a valid Sacramento State OneCard to the bus driver before boarding the bus and riding.

    Students can also use Sacramento Regional Transit (RT), which services the Greater Sacramento Area and has several buses that service the area surrounding Sacramento State. Students can access Sacramento Regional Transit fixed-route transit services, including the light rail. Students pay a nominal fee for this service through registration fees.

    To use the Sacrament Regional Transit buses, CSUS students must present a valid Sacramento State OneCard and the student commuter sleeve.

    Parking

    Cal State Sacramento students living off-campus may opt to drive to and from campus instead of walking, biking, or using the Hornet Shuttle and Sacramento Regional Transit. Sacramento State offers its students permits on a semester and summer session basis.

    Students can purchase a Semester Permit for $178 each semester or a Summer Permit for $119 for the duration of summer. To purchase any permit, students must show a valid Sacramento State OneCard.

    Safety

    California State University, Sacramento offers the Hornet Safety Escort service. Students can call the Hornet Safety Escort phone number and let a dispatcher know their location and destination. The service will guide students traveling in a car/van, electric cart, or on foot to their intended destination.

    The Hornet Safety Escort service is not to be used as a shuttle service. Its hours of operations are Monday through Thursday, from 6 PM to 12 AM.

    Shopping

    California State University, Sacramento students also have plenty of options when it comes to shopping near their off-campus apartments. There is the Grocery Outlet just off-campus for students looking for bargains on their grocery shopping. Down Folsom Boulevard, there’s also Corti Brothers and Trader Joe’s.

    For students living across the American River, there are more grocery shopping options with Raley’s and Safeway.

    Down 65th Street, there is a Target, where students can stock up on groceries and other essentials.

    For some more traditional retail therapy, CSUS students can head to the Arden Mall, which offers 150 shops, a food court, and full-service restaurants. Students can shop at stores like LUSH, Madewell, and Sephora. Near the mall, there is also a Barnes & Noble as well as Ulta.
