University at Buffalo Off-Campus Housing Guide

Located in upstate New York, University at Buffalo, also called SUNY Buffalo, is one of the largest public research universities in the nation. Comprised of three campuses, North, South, and Downtown, thousands of students, both undergraduate and graduate, attend the university every year. With beautiful autumn foliage, the city of Buffalo, and Niagara Falls not too far away, students flock to the school.

While students tend to live on campus in dorms during their first two years, many decide to move off-campus at SUNY Buffalo.

There are a few different neighborhoods where students studying at SUNY Buffalo will move. They all have a different atmosphere, so students have the option to find the best neighborhood for their lifestyle and budget.

Amherst has been named one of the safest suburbs in America. Located near North Campus, Amherst is made up of small residential neighborhoods. It is known for being quiet and is a popular spot for off-campus University at Buffalo housing.

Elmwood Village is full of trendy cafes, bars, and restaurants and lined with little boutique shops. Students are recommended to look for apartments east of Richmond Avenue and west of Lindwood Avenue. It is also located near North Campus.

Allentown is a little more offbeat than Elmwood Village. This off-campus neighborhood offers plenty of bars with live music on the weekends, cafes, and restaurants. It is located near North Campus.

Delaware Park is home to Buffalo’s Little Italy, which promises great and enticing food. There is a mix of commercial and residential streets in this neighborhood. Residents also enjoy the beautiful Delaware Park for strolls on a nice day.

There are plenty of on-campus dormitories where students typically live for their first two years of undergrad.

When moving off-campus at SUNY Buffalo, students have the option to find roommates and rent apartments. Most off-campus housing also offers sublets near SUNY Buffalo for when students study abroad.

There are plenty of restaurants close to off-campus apartments near University at Buffalo. Elmwood Avenue is lined with popular restaurants amongst college students such as Mister Pizza, Ashker’s, JT’s, and Panera. Also located in the Elmwood Village is Pho Dollar, great for a warm meal on a cold winter day, and Sweet-ness 7 Café, a wonderful and unique place for brunch, breakfast, or lunch.

Along Hertel Avenue near Delaware Park, there are restaurants such as Bertha’s Diner, Burning Buffalo Bar and Grill, and Deep South Taco.

As for nightlife and bars, there are some scattered throughout the area. Some of the most popular bars are sports bars such as the Thirsty Buffalo, Mr. Goodbar, and McGarrets. If you are looking for something a little more upscale and trendier, check out Providence Social.

There are also many more restaurants and bars located near the Downtown campus, which is just a bus or metro ride away.

SUNY Buffalo has its own shuttle network where students can ride for free with their college ID. There are multiple bus routes that travel within the individual campuses, to and from the three campuses, and off-campus locations such as the Boulevard Mall and off-campus apartments near SUNY Buffalo.

There is also a bus that will take students to other major cities within New York such as Albany, Binghamton, Syracuse, and New York City during certain weekends, holidays, and breaks.

Along with campus shuttles, the city of Buffalo also has a metro rail line and city buses through the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority. This public transportation has stops on the three campuses and throughout the city and suburbs of Buffalo, making it easy for students to travel within the area.

Some neighborhoods near SUNY Buffalo do require students to have a car to drive to campus. Keep in mind that first and second-year students, if they are living on campus, are not allowed to have a car on campus. Commuters must register their car with the school and apply for a parking permit.

Parking is limited and some students may struggle to find a spot if they come to campus later in the day.

Parking off-campus and throughout the residential neighborhoods, students will find metered and timed street parking. However, most off-campus apartments near SUNY Buffalo do have parking spaces for their tenants.

Safety precautions taken by SUNY Buffalo include blue light phones around campus and on its outskirts, walking escorts, and a night shuttle bus. This nighttime shuttle bus operates on and off-campus for students throughout the night. It runs between 8 pm and 2 am and is free for students with their college ID.

There are several grocery stores in the area surrounding SUNY Buffalo. These include Whole Foods, Trader Joes, Wegmans, Walmart, and Tops Friendly Market. This gives students a variety of options when it comes to buying groceries from organic to budget friendly.

Also, near student apartments is the Boulevard Mall, which is home to stores like Express, H&M, JCPenney, Macy’s, American Eagle Outfitters, and many more. Nearby the mall is The Boulevard Consumer Square, a strip mall with even more stores like The Christmas Tree Shops.

Downtown, students will find even more retail stores and small businesses where they can shop for clothing, shoes, accessories, and more.
