🎓When students are not living off-campus, they can choose between any of ASU's 9 on-campus dorms. The most popular dorms at Arizona State University are Barrett, the Honors College, Cholla Apartments, Hassayampa.
As a freshman entering Arizona State, campus housing is mandatory. However, as your education continues, it may be in your financial best interest to move off-campus. With that in mind, here is the city guide for moving off-campus at Arizona State.
Neighborhoods
Tempe, AZ has an abundance of ASU Off-Campus Housing options. For instance, you can stay at the Villas on Apache, which are on the Tempe bus route and therefore just a few stops away from campus. Or, conversely, you can stay just steps away from the ASU campus near the Sun Devils’ stadium.
Of course, you can always look into apartments that are further away, such as the Park Tower Apartments, which are eight miles off campus, but may be worth the additional commute due to their pet-friendly apartments. Whether you’re looking for something within walking distance or simply a short drive away, there are countless Tempe apartment options available to you.
And if you’re looking for ASU roommates for a new off-campus housing apartment, you can easily find those online -- or if you’d rather sublet an ASU apartment and take over a room, that’s easily done too.
Dining
If you’re looking for good food, whether between classes or for a post-homework bite, Tempe, AZ is home to countless eatery options, many of which are just a short walk from campus.
For authentic, Indian/Pakistani cuisine, the Curry Corner on East Apache Boulevard is only a few blocks from campus and offers numerous vegetarian options. It’s affordable and delicious, making this family-owned restaurant one to add to your list.
For those carnivores, El Pollo Supremo on West University Drive offers either chicken or beef dishes for under $5, which is great for students on a college budget. Additionally, The Chuckbox is located on East University Drive and has fantastic burgers right next to the ASU campus. Just make sure you have cash!
Transportation
The ASU campus offers intercampus shuttles to transport both students and faculty to Downtown Phoenix, Polytechnic, Tempe and West campuses. Buses run on school days and weekends.
In addition, Valley Metro buses and light rail offer discounts for ASU students and faculty with the ASU transit pass. So even for living off-campus without a car, there are options available to students in order to get to classes every day. Just ensure you leave yourself enough time, as bus schedules can vary.
Parking
If you own a car and plan to drive and park on campus throughout the year, it’s in your best interest to purchase either an annual or semester permit. While these can be relatively expensive, you should consider them if you’re looking for parking without the necessity of public transportation.
That being said, there are free parking options available to you as well. Should you choose to drive, you can park for free at the Tempe Library and then take the Orbit (a bus that will take you to campus, downtown Tempe and the light rail station) for free.
While this may not be the most convenient method of transportation, it is no cost to students, and therefore a feasible option when you are living off-campus.
Safety
Both ASU faculty and police are vigilant in ensuring the campus is a safe place for students. That being said, there were 152 crime-related incidents with college students in 2018, which is higher than a little over 4,000 other campuses.
With this in mind, ensure you are following safety precautions in utilizing public transportation and avoid traveling at night whenever possible.
Shopping
There are countless areas in which you can grocery shop or pick out some new apparel near the ASU campus.
If you’re looking for groceries, Sam’s Club is located about 8 miles off campus, but allows students to shop in bulk for the groceries that they need. So, while it may be a longer commute, you will need to go less often.
For fashion purchases, the Tempe Marketplace is a popular choice, as it’s an outdoor shopping center with many stores to choose from. Otherwise, you can also visit Arizona Mills, which is another shopping mall with many options. Both malls are within three miles of campus, which makes for a quick trip for items that you need or a fun day out with the roommates.
As with any mall, certain stores may offer student discounts, so be sure to check online for the availability of such discounts while you’re there!
The bottom line is that, when living off-campus at Arizona State University, there are countless options available to you. It just takes a little research to determine the best ASU off-campus apartment that meets your student living needs.
