🎓When students are not living off-campus, they can choose between any of GVSU's 19 on-campus dorms. The most popular dorms at Grand Valley State University are Copeland Living Center, Grand Valley Apartments (GVA), Holton Hooker.
Grand Valley State University (GVSU) was established in 1960 in Allendale, Michigan, and is a liberal arts college whose campus is located just west of Grand Rapids. This gorgeous campus has plenty to offer, whether students choose to stay on campus or venture out into the surrounding towns.
NeighborhoodsGrand Valley State University has many options for off-campus housing for GVSU students.
For instance, the Campus View apartment complex is located nearly a minute away from the Allendale campus (making it the ideal walking distance). Simply take 42nd Avenue and you are on campus!
There are also the Canvas apartments located in Allendale on 48th Ave. These apartments are just a four-minute walk from campus, via 48th and Luce Street. Or, at an equal distance, you can look at the Mystic Woods apartments located on Pierce Street in Allendale, which are about a five-minute walk from campus via Pierce Street.
Other apartment complexes to consider in these areas include 48 West, Locale, The Alpine, and The Lodge Allendale.
For those GVSU students looking to put a little more distance between the campus and off-campus apartments, check out apartment complexes that are in the Grand Rapids area, which is about 12 miles away from campus.
Here, you can opt for the Diamond Place apartments located on Michigan Street, which is a 20-minute drive from campus. If that is a little too far for your comfort, you can also move in a little closer into the Jenison area, in which you will find the Cottonwood apartments. These apartments are a nine-minute (or seven-mile) drive from campus, so you will experience a little more separation without the hassle of a long drive to class.
When it comes down to it, no matter what you are looking for, GVSU has off-campus housing that is as close or far away from campus as you need it to be!
DiningGrand Valley State University has some fantastic food options to keep you full between classes.
Bangkok Taste, an Asian/Tai cuisine restaurant located in Jenison, is well-reviewed and patrons rave that the food is well worth whatever wait you will need to endure.
If you are less adventurous with your food and prefer burgers/American foods, Mr Burger 6 and Rainbow Grill are also fantastic places to stop. Located in Hudsonville and Grandville, respectively, both restaurants are well-rated and are within seven miles of campus.
If you need some vegetarian options, the Peppermill Grill located in Walker, MI is inexpensive, vegetarian-friendly, and serves American cuisine within six miles of campus.
Last, but not least, if you have more of a sweet tooth (or are just more of a breakfast person), Sprinkles Donut Shop is the number one bakery in Hudsonville that is a little over five miles from campus, but totally worth stopping by.
TransportationGrand Valley State University offers a variety of transportation methods to its students, both on and off-campus.
While the university offers some methods for ridesharing, bike riding and a variety of parking permits that suit your schedule, the main appeal for transportation at the GVSU campus is the option to ride the bus for free.
GVSU faculty and students alike can ride any Rapid Bus Route for free, simply by showing the driver your GVSU ID.
There are numerous buses to choose from, servicing a variety of needs. For instance, there is an apartment connector line as well as a weekend and break service line, or you can simply take the South and North campus shuttles to get where you need to go.
All bus routes and schedules are laid out clearly and easily on the GVSU website, so no matter what type of transportation you need, the campus bus has you covered!
ParkingIf you are not a fan of public transportation, or if you are simply bringing your own car to campus with you, there are parking permits available at the Grand Valley State University campus.
The campus is a permit-only campus, so you must have a permit to park on campus. That being said, you can purchase a permit to fit your schedule and needs.
For instance, if you will not be using parking services often, you can always purchase a day permit for when you need it. However, if you are looking to park on campus often, you may need to investigate psemester-long parking options, which is $240.
SafetyIn addition to the various resources Grand Valley State University has on campus, such as the local police and campus police, the campus also provides numerous other safety options for students.
For instance, there is the GVSUAlert! Emergency Notification System, which all students can register for. By doing so, you will receive alerts via text whenever there is an emergency in the university community.
In addition, students can create a Smart911 profile so that dispatchers have the information they need to help you in the event of an emergency. Plus, the GVPD offers students a Safewalk Program, which means that members of the Department of Public Safety will walk you across campus if you feel unsafe, ensuring you feel secure on campus.
ShoppingLast, but not least, Grand Valley State University is not without its shopportunities.
For one, you can find Target and Walmart within 10 miles of campus. But aside from that, there are plenty of places in which you can get some unique and fun finds.
