Overall, the closer you are to IU, the more likely you are to find undergraduates and student apartments. The further out you go, you will find larger houses and more families. Neighborhoods
One popular area for students to live in is in the downtown Bloomington area, specifically near Kirkwood Avenue. A large upside to living off-campus in downtown Bloomington is its proximity to bars, restaurants, and nightlife. But please keep in mind that many apartments are more expensive in this area than other residential areas, and there can be problems with noise especially around weekends and city events.
Other popular neighborhoods for students to live in are the area between Indiana Avenue to North Adams Street and Second Street to 15th Street. Many students also choose to live east of High Street. These areas are more residential and feature fewer restaurants and nightlife, but their apartment rental prices are generally lower than living directly in the downtown area. Students should note that the further away they live from campus, the more likely they will be to need a car for transportation around the city and to campus.
There are a few apartment complexes nearby to the university that cater directly to students. Brownstone Terrace is a complex for students living off-campus. Their complex includes a volleyball court, pool, covered parking, and access to the IU campus bus.
The Dillon is another student living complex nearby to campus. The Dillon hosts many events like tie dye parties and brunch. Tenants there can enjoy the pool and hot tub, fitness center, basketball courts, and private shuttles to campus. They are also a great option for pet-friendly housing.
Finally, Evolve Bloomington boasts everything a college student might need like a health and fitness center, courtyard, study space, tanning beds.
Dining
Fourth Street is the place where you will find most of Bloomington's best restaurants and places to eat. It features a variety of eateries that specialize in many things from Indian and Tibetan food to American Barbeque. Besides Fourth Street, there are also some good eateries to be found around the town square area. Bloomington Sandwich Company, Village Deli, The Owlery, Runcible Spoon and BuffaLouie's can be found around Kirkwood Avenue and in the town square.
Some of the most popular student bars are Kilroy's Bar and Grill alongside Bluebird Nightclub.
Transportation
Bloomington has a public bus service and free campus bus that Indiana University students often take advantage of. Also, many IU students choose to drive around the city, as there are many options for parking.

Students are required to have a parking permit to park on campus.
Safety
Bloomington is generally a safe area without much crime. As always, students should take caution when going places at night and by themselves. The IU police department does have an escort service for students needing extra protection or peace of mind. Shopping
Nearby to campus, IU students can get their groceries at Rong Cheng Supermarket or Aldi. They may also enjoy the Fresh Thyme Farmers Market that is not too far away.For shopping, students can find many shops within the Carmichael Center, Eastland Plaza, and College Mall.
