Northern Arizona University is a large public research university with its main campus in Flagstaff, Arizona. NAU has a campus size of 829 acres and welcomes more than 25,000 students per year, with more than 60% students living off-campus.
Neighborhoods
Flagstaff has many neighborhoods near the university students can choose from when deciding where they should live off-campus. If you want to live closer to campus, you can investigate places in the Sawmill Place neighborhood, which is close to NAU. Downtown Flagstaff, and specifically Heritage Square, is another neighborhood that is close to the NAU campus and bustling with activity, from shops to restaurants and more. Or for a more residential neighborhood that is also close to campus, you can consider the University Heights area, which is a quiet neighborhood that contains University Highlands Park.
Perhaps the best way to search for an off-campus apartment near NAU is by simply considering how far you would like to live from campus. Complexes within about a mile of campus include Pine View Village, University West, and Sterling Pointe.
For apartments, a bit over a mile and a half away from NAU’s main campus, check out Clear Creek Village, The Ridge at Clear Creek, Woodlands Village Apartments, and University Square Apartments. These apartment communities have one, two, and three-bedroom units available with plenty of great amenities and top-notch features that students will enjoy.
If you don’t mind living a bit further from campus, great apartment communities within five miles of NAU that have a lot to offer include Fremont Station, Mountain Trail Apartments, Highland Village, Butterfield Apartments, The Summit at Flagstaff, or The Bungalows on Pine Cliff.
Dining
Whatever type of food you are in the mood for, you are likely to find it in Flagstaff! If you are looking for a nice, sit down restaurant, consider places like 1899 Bar & Grill, Silver Pine Restaurant & Bar, or The Spot at Seven Canyons. These places are all known for their delicious American cuisine and friendly service. For some Mediterranean food, you should visit Taverna Modern Mediterranean. For a quick pizza, visit Pizzicletta, and try their Pizza Neapolitan.
Finally, if you are looking for a cute coffee shop in Flagstaff, you can visit Simply Delicious Café Daily Fare or Campus Coffee Bean. Both places have a great atmosphere for a busy college student.
Transportation
There are many ways to get around the campus of Northern Arizona University and the city of Flagstaff. One of them is the Mountain Line Transit System, which is a system of buses. This system has eight routes that will take you around campus and off campus. Some routes, like Route 10, will take you off campus to Woodlands Village, downtown Flagstaff, and Aspen Place. (For this route, you can ride for free when you present your JacksCard, but you can choose to buy a pass to use other bus routes.) Additionally, you can use the NAU Campus Shuttle to get around campus. The two daytime routes, Louie, and Jacks, along with the single nighttime route, AXELite, can take you from North Campus to South Campus.
Along with riding buses, you can also bike to campus. The NAU campus is very bike-friendly since there are many bike racks and lockers. They even offer a Bike Hub station, which provides maintenance for your bike. If you do not own a bike, but would like to borrow one, you can check out the NAU Yellow Bike Program for a short-term rental. Of course, be sure to register your bike with the NAU Parking and Shuttle Services and the Flagstaff Police Department.
Parking
Although there are many ways to get around campus, you might need to drive if you live far away. If you decide to drive to campus, you will need to purchase a parking permit to allow you to park in one of the campus’s parking garages. Some of the parking permits available are: North Commuter, South Commuter, Knoles Parking Garage, San Francisco Parking Garage, and Evening Only. Be sure to purchase your permit early since they tend to sell out quickly.
Off-campus, you can find limited parking around Downtown Flagstaff. You can choose to park on designated street spaces, or in one of the parking garages: Phoenix Avenue Lot, Lumberyard Lot, and Heritage Square Garage. You can pay for your parking at a nearby kiosk. (However, be aware of the winter parking restrictions since you will not be allowed to park overnight in these places.) If you choose to drive to get around, you can pay for parking on campus or around the city.
Safety
Northern Arizona University has it owns police department to ensure the protection of all NAU students. As in any city, it is important to be aware of your surroundings. It is always a good idea to travel with friends, and do not leave valuables in plain sight.
Shopping
There are many places to shop in Flagstaff, whether you are looking for groceries or for a larger department store.
If you are looking to buy groceries, you can choose to shop at Safeway, Walmart, Whole Foods Market, and Sam’s Club. Smaller supermarkets around town include Basha’s and Sprouts Farmer’s Market.
Additionally, if you want to shop for other things, you can visit the Flagstaff Downtown Business Improvement and Revitalization District. You will find stores for everything in this area, from jewelry stores to clothing stores to home décor. Stores include Basement Marketplace, Bright Side Bookshop, Rainbows End, Flagstaff General Store, and Shoes and Such.
