Neighborhoods
The University of Michigan itself has four adjoining campuses -- North Campus, the Medical campus, Central Campus, and the athletic campus -- so depending on your field of study, certain housing options may be better for you. The center of Central Campus -- home of the Diag -- is bordered by N. University Ave., E. University Ave., S. University Ave., and S. State St.
The Tappan Neighborhood is located just south of Central Campus and is at the center of the University of Michigan off-campus neighborhoods. Walkable from the Diag, the Tappan neighborhood is bordered by S. University Ave., S. State St., Arbor St./Oakland Ave., Washtenaw Ave., and S. Forest Ave/Hill St. Many Greek houses and student residents are in Tappan in addition to the Law Quad, Ross School of Business. Check out University Plaza and 733 Oakland Ave for different off-campus housing options.
West of campus, Germantown lies between State St. and Main St. A very historical area, Germantown is home to The Cube and the Michigan Union. Apartment complexes in this neighborhood include Corner House Apartments, Ann Arbor Tower Plaza, Kaplan Properties, and Portal Spaces Co.
Other neighborhoods within walking distance from the different campuses that may get you more bang for your buck include Yost, North Ingalls, East Packard, Old Fourth Ward, Old West Side, East Packard, South University, Oxbridge, North Burns Park, and West Murfin.
Dining
Popular food options located near campus include restaurants such as Buffalo Wild Wings, Jimmy John's, Panera Bread, and Einstein Bros. Bagels.
Other fan-favorite dining options in the area include Pizza House, Sava's, Mani Osteria, New York Pizza Depot, Zingerman's Delicatessen, Angelo's, and South U Pizza. Students living west of campus may particularly enjoy restaurants such as NeoPaplis, Tomukun Noodle Bar, Asian Legend, and Jerusalem Garden.
There are many pubs and bars around the University of Michigan's campus as well. Ashley's - Ann Arbor is an Irish pub with a huge beer list and plenty of scotch. Transportation
For UM students living farther from campus, there are a few different transportation options available. First and foremost is MagicBus, the University of Michigan's own bus service. The bus routes are generally broken down into Campus-focused routes and Michigan Medicine-focused routes.
Ann Arbor itself also offers bus services within the city and to nearby communities through the Ann Arbor Area Transportation Authority, otherwise known as “TheRide.” TheRide works closely with academic institutions in the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti area, offering current University of Michigan students, faculty, and staff unlimited access to TheRide's fixed-route bus service with a valid yellow Mcard. Additional benefits of TheRide include discounted fares on ExpressRide, free parking at any of TheRide's Park and Ride lots, access to an employee vanpool program, and connections between U-M Bus Routes and TheRide Bus Routes at certain campus locations. If you need to get to the airport, transportation is available through the MichiganFlyer.
Parking
The University of Michigan offers free parking on Central Campus Monday-Saturday after 6pm and all day on Sunday. However, parking space is often limited.
Undergraduate juniors and seniors are also eligible for the Student Orange Permit. This parking permit is honored in North, Ross Athletic, and West Side Orange lots labeled NC, SC, and W; the permit is not considered valid in parking lot M75.
Another parking option for UM students is Student Storage Parking. This is designed for students who bring their vehicles to campus but do not need to access them frequently. Student Storage parking is available to all students on a first-come, first-served basis.
Safety
Safety is a number one priority for most students deciding to live off-campus. In any case of emergency or to report suspicious activity, students should contact the Department of Public Safety and Security. DPSS is available 24/7 and can be reached by calling 911 or (734) 763-1131. Blue light phones located around campus also connect directly to DPSS.
The University of Michigan also offers safe transportation options 24 hours a day and University of Michigan Emergency Alerts. This urgent, mass notification system keeps students, faculty, and staff informed about major emergencies on and near campus. Students can opt into text, voice, and/or email alerts.
Additionally, DPSS offers free self-defense workshops to students. Workshops include verbal exercises, physical drills, and more.
Shopping
There are many grocery stores and shopping options available near campus. Ann Arbor Farmers Market and The Produce Station offer fresh fruits and vegetables in addition to baked goods and flowers. Kroger, Busch's Fresh Food Market, Sergeant Pepper's General Store, and Hiller's are full grocery stores. Meanwhile, People's Food Co-op, Trader Joe's, and Whole Foods are great options for specialty foods and snacks.
Several places to purchase clothing are located within walking distance from campus. Bivouac and Moosejaw offer a wide variety of outdoor wear. Footprints and Van Boven Shoes sell shoes and boots for both men and women. Van Boven, Vintage to Vogue, and Renaissance offer more expensive formal clothing. Other options near campus include Sam's Clothing and Urban Outfitters.
Larger shopping complexes, like Briarwood Mall, are a bit further away from the University of Michigan. However, Marshalls, Target, TJ Maxx, and REI can all be found near campus.
